Blog 21: Exit Interview

Content:
(1) What is your essential question, and what are your answers? What is your best answer and why?
  • "How does wildlife rehabilitation benefit the community?"
  • Answers:
    • Wildlife rehabilitation benefit the community by providing us early detection of wildlife disease outbreaks.
    • Wildlife rehabilitation benefit the community by reducing as much human and wildlife conflict.
    • Wildlife rehabilitation benefit the community by keeping an ecological balance in our ecosystems, to help avoid any ecosystems disturbance.
  • Best Answer:
    • Wildlife rehabilitation benefit the community by keeping an ecological balance in our ecosystems, to help avoid any ecosystems disturbance.
 (2) What process did you take to arrive at this answer?
  • The process it took me to arrive to this answer was basically through all my research but how I also realized that us as humans care about usually one thing is living. So I came to conclude that wildlife rehabilitation can benefit the community by keeping an ecological balance because wildlife rehabilitators are in charge of keeping up data, research, and setting down laws to stop any disturbances in our environment that can screw up our life style.
(3) What problems did you face? How did you resolve them?
  • Some of the problems that I had faced during my senior project is trying to be consistent with my notes. There were times where I got stuck and felt I couldn't find anymore articles to use for my research check. But I had resolved that issue by looking up specific articles on zoonotic diseases or about our ecosystems; not necessarily focusing on only wildlife rehabilitation.
(4) What are the two most significant sources you used to answer your essential question and why?
  • One source that was most significant to me that helped me find my answers for my essential question was an article by "Wildlife Rehabilitators Do More Than People Realize" by Shirley. The reason why it was significant to me because it was the first article I had found that went into more depth on why wildlife rehabilitation and the workers in it do that has a huge impact in our lives.
  • My second source would be the article "Wildlife Rehabilitators Contribute to the Public Health", the reason why for its significance was that it helped me discover my answer one.

Blog 15: Independent Component 2 Approval

Content:

Please review the component contract on page 12 of the senior project packet.   The Independent Component 2 is an opportunity for you to add a dimension of creativity and/or an additional outlet for research.  The goal of the component is for you to explore your answers in more depth.  On Friday, April 24, 2014, you will be turning in the following to your blog to prove completion of this component:

·       Log of hours on an digital spreadsheet (with total number of hours included)
·       Evidence of the 30 hours of work (e.g. transcript, essays, tests, art work,
        photographs) as digital artifacts
·       LIA

The senior team expects that your log will be on the right hand side of your blog in the Senior Project Hours link.   In addition to this,  we expect that you will be able to prove the total 30 hours of work by submitting evidence to the blog by the due date.  For this blog post and approval, please answer the following questions.

1.  Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
For my 30 hours I will be creating and organizing an event that will be helping finding homes for our rescued bunnies. At my organization we have rescued many of our bunnies we have today, but theres a problem many of the bunnies that we have rescued had of course been reproducing. For months we've been trying to separate the females from the males but the still managed to either sneak in to where the males or the females are or we have accidentally mixed one male with female bunnies. So due to all that we have had an extreme growth in our bunny population and not able to really keep all of them since we are running out of room. And it's really unfair to just have the bunnies being overcrowded. So my plan is to help create an event where we can welcome anyone who is interested on adopting a cute furry friend to take home. Basically trying to promote it and have people come and get to interact with the the animals we do have. While organizing this event I will not just be promoting the bunnies by also informing others about what good animal rehabilitation is to our community. Also there will be a adopting fee for each bunny and the money will go towards the funding for our animals.

2.  Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
When showing 30 hours of evidence I will be providing a flyer which I will create my self promoting the event. Also take lots of picture of the event and make sure a few of them have me in it with the bunnies. I will keep all recites of any payment of any supplies that I will need for the event. And last of all I will give my mentors contact information so you can contact him to verify my 30 hours of work.

3.  Explain how this component will help you explore your topic in more depth.
This component will help me explore my topic in more depth by understanding what animals rehabilitation does. They take care and nurture the animals and when they are done and healed they bring them back to there habitat but see if your working with domestic animals after the animals have been healed or rescued they need a place to go. So rehabilitators help find good homes for their animals and make sure there in good care.

Your answers to the questions should be supported with details and examples for the senior team to understand what you plan to do.   Once we review your Blog Post 15, your house teacher will discuss with you the approval of your plan.  If it is approved, please start working on it.  If it is not approved, your house teacher will explain why.  It is your job to address the concerns so you can get your component approved.

Independent Component 1

  • LITERAL
    (a) I,Alyssa Jurkevics, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 23 hours of work.
    (b) The source that I used that helped me completed my independent component was my mentor Gary Mitchell, the founder of the organization Planet Rehab. Most of the information that I received for my topic which helped me tied into my independent component was from him.
  • (d) Explain what you completed: What I had completed for my independent component was help organize three different events to help raise awareness to local communities and help raise money for all the expenses of the animals we care for. By the end of it all I was only able to complete 23 hours of my independent component.
  • INTERPRETIVE
Defend your work and explain its significance to your project and how it demonstrates 30 hours of work.   Provide evidence (photos, transcript, art work, videos, etc) of the 30 hours of work.
  • The significance of my work to my project was that in order to become a wildlife rehabilitator you need to be skilled in many other things than just be skilled at one. Such has informing people, show awareness to the community about the animals, and being able to do marketing to attract people to come help participate in the cause or help donate money. Because the sad truth is the government isn't willing to pay for all the expenses for the wildlife rehabilitation centers, most of these places survive on there own by doing fundraisers and events to recruit people or to find potential donors to donate money to help keep it running. Also to become a wildlife rehabilitator you need to be able to have great communication skills to inform others about the benefits of wildlife rehabilitation and what they do.

Blog 13: Lesson 2 Reflection

1.What are you most proud of in your Lesson 2 Presentation and why?

Well what I'm post proud of my presentation is that I felt I was well organized with my powerpoint  and I had a lot of good informational responses to my EQ.

2. a.     What assessment would you give yourself on your Lesson 2 Presentation (self-assessment)?

       I would give my self a P.

 b.     Explain why you deserve that grade using evidence from the Lesson 2 component contract.

The reason why I feel like I deserve a P is because I felt like my professionalism was on point I had good volume and also I had engaged with my audiance pretty well. Also my organization and creativity was great because I put everything in order in my presentation and I had used my time wisely.

3. What worked for you in your Lesson 2?

What worked for me in my lesson plan was that with my EQ I had chosen for my lesson 2 plan and the response i gave because I had a lot of goo information to back up my response.

4. What didn't work? If you had a time machine, what would you have done differently to improve your Lesson 2?

What didn't work was that I was nervous and talked fast so If I could have done something different to improve my lesson plan 2 was to probably slow my pace down so I could have filled up more of my time responding to my EQ and also to mention my mentorship.

5. What do you think your answer #2 is going to be?

My answer two would be it helps minimize human and wildlife conflict.
